A mentally unstable loner (Jang Dong-gun) lives on the streets of Seoul. He makes a living collecting recyclables from trash cans and sorting mail for the Korean post office. After getting fired from his recycling job, he decides to regroup and recover by taking a vacation in Vietnam. On the way to Ho Chi Minh City, he meets a woman named Bin (Lee Yeong-ae) at the airport who is also going there for business purposes. They fall in love with each other and go sightseeing together by renting bicycles and going to busy markets. He spends his time with Bin by taking her to the post office he used to work at, where he steals passports and sells them; in return, Bin gives him enough money for him to travel back to Seoul. Later, she is arrested by Vietnamese police for passing fake checks. He then goes on a mission to rescue her with his newfound friends that he meets at the post office.
The film grossed in South Korea alone since its release on 6 November 2010, and it has grossed worldwide. It is also ranked among the top-ten highest-grossing R-rated films in Korea with over 6 million admissions since its release in November 2010.
The film was released in Japan on 29 May 2011, where it opened at #5 at the box office. It grossed $332,136 in 6 weeks of screening. It was later distributed in Hong Kong (13 June) and Taiwan (15 June). As of 18 July 2011 it has grossed over $4 million in the three Asian countries.
"The Man from Nowhere" received positive reviews in English-speaking parts of Asia. IMDb gave it 7.7 out of 10. Movie Mania rated it 4/5 stars and described the film as "spicy and fun" and "a wonderful mix between action and drama." On Douban, the movie scored 8.4/10 (Directed by Jeong) and 7.9/10 (Acting). The film was released in South Korea on December 15, 2010 along with other sequels that were to be released in 2011: "Nowhere Boy" (2nd), "School: Love On" (6th) and "The Thieves" (9th). In the United States the film was released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on 11 September 2011. It includes a featurette, a making-of, a commentary by Jang Dong-gun, Lee Yeong-ae and Director Jeong Jeong-hak. The Blu-ray also has two additional features: an interview with actor Kang Hyeon-tak and a "making of" video.
"Man from Nowhere Original Soundtrack" (CD+DVD) was released on 10 November 2010, by Universal Music Group; it contains 15 tracks with the main score composed by Jung Jae Young and performed by Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra (Score Arrangement: Chulhun Park).
